Geosynthetics are considered as popular materials due to their cost-effective and inexpensive nature. It should be kept in mind that this geosynthetic material is completely safe and is considered to be one of the friendliest materials.
The production of geotextiles has its own characteristics and can be categorized into several types. The main advantages of this material include high strength, durability and ease of use for construction projects of any complexity.
Geotextile is a synthetic material. This construction material has a wide range of uses. This is due to the versatility and range of benefits of geosynthetics.
Origin of geotextiles
The weaving method is used everywhere as it is a traditional method. Nonwovens are obtained by needling or thermal bonding. There are geographical divisions based on the production characteristics of geotextiles.
For example, needle-punched geotextiles require the use of a needle press. The perforation process allows the fibers to penetrate the different layers, giving the material a density similar to that of felt. This fabric has a good filtration capacity and water can pass through it in both directions, especially longitudinally and horizontally. The main application for this fiber is drainage systems. This production method is common in most high-tech countries, including the EU.
Thermal bonding is an alloy of polypropylene fibers. This method is most common in Asian countries and CIS countries.
Two methods of manufacturing geotextiles make it possible to obtain materials with different properties. Needle-punched geotextile has high filtration properties, making it suitable for any soil. However, at the same time, it is not strong enough. For this reason, it is necessary to compensate by adding a reinforcing mesh to the structure.
The heat-treated material has increased strength, but only allows water to pass through. Due to its properties, this geotextile can be used for soil reinforcement.
Each geosynthetic material has its own direction of application. This allows us to consider universal materials.
