The raw materials for making geomembranes include polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), and may also involve other polymer materials such as polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS).
What are the raw materials of geomembrane?
Geomembrane is a waterproof barrier material with high molecular polymer as the basic raw material. Its main raw materials include the following:
1. Polyethylene (PE)
High-density polyethylene (HDPE): HDPE geomembrane has excellent heat resistance, cold resistance and chemical stability, and can resist strong acids, strong alkalis, oils and media with high corrosion coefficients. At the same time, it has high mechanical strength and toughness, and can withstand certain tensile and compression deformations to ensure the stability and safety of engineering structures. HDPE geomembrane is widely used in water conservancy projects, landfills, slag treatment and industrial anti-seepage, etc., which require high corrosion resistance.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE): LDPE geomembrane shows stronger advantages in aging resistance and environmental stress, is relatively soft and easy to construct, and can better adapt to complex terrain and engineering structures. It is mainly used in places where long-term stability of materials is required, such as agricultural irrigation, aquaculture and other fields.
2. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
PVC geomembrane has good tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance, and also has good weather resistance and chemical corrosion resistance. However, harmful substances such as hydrogen chloride may be produced during the processing, which has a certain impact on the environment. Therefore, with increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements today, the application of PVC geomembranes has been subject to certain restrictions. But under certain conditions, it is still a geotechnical material with excellent performance.
3. Ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)
EVA geomembrane is a new type of geotechnical material developed in recent years. It combines the rigidity of ethylene and the flexibility of vinyl acetate. While maintaining good anti-seepage performance, it also has good flexibility and low temperature resistance. This makes EVA geomembrane perform well in cold areas or projects that require high flexibility. In addition, EVA geomembrane also has good bonding and processing properties, which is convenient for construction and installation.
4. Other materials
In addition to the above-mentioned main materials, the production of geomembranes may also involve other polymer materials, such as polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), etc. These materials each have their own unique performance advantages and application fields, and can be selected according to specific engineering needs.
