Geosynthetic Clay Liner is an efficient, durable and environmentally friendly anti-seepage lining material with broad application prospects.
What is Geosynthetic Clay Liner?
Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL for short) is a geosynthetic clay cushion, also known as geocomposite bentonite cushion. It is mainly composed of two layers (or multiple layers) of geosynthetics (such as fabrics, membranes, etc.) with a layer of sodium bentonite in the middle. This material combines the excellent waterproof performance of bentonite and the physical strength of geosynthetics to form an efficient and durable anti-seepage liner.
1.Main features
Excellent waterproof and anti-seepage performance: bentonite particles will expand rapidly when they come into contact with water to form a dense waterproof layer, which effectively prevents water penetration. Its anti-seepage hydrostatic pressure can reach more than 1.0MPa, and its permeability coefficient is extremely low, usually in the order of 10^-9 cm/s.
Self-healing ability: bentonite has a self-healing function. Even if the waterproof layer is slightly punctured or damaged, the defects can be repaired by the expansion of bentonite, and the good waterproof effect can be maintained.
Easy construction: GCL is easy to cut and splice, and no hot melt or adhesive is required during the construction process, which shortens the construction period. At the same time, it also has a high overall shear strength, which is convenient for construction and transportation.
Green and environmentally friendly: Bentonite is a natural inorganic material, harmless and non-toxic to the human body, and has no special impact on the environment. It is an environmentally friendly waterproof material.
Good durability: GCL is resistant to aging, chemical corrosion, biological erosion, and has a long service life.
2.Application scope
GCL is widely used in waste landfills, underground reservoirs, underground infrastructure construction and other projects in environmental engineering to solve sealing, isolation, and anti-leakage problems. At the same time, it is also commonly used in underground waterproofing and anti-seepage construction in municipal, highway, railway, water conservancy, environmental protection, industrial and civil buildings, such as artificial lakes, landscape lake management, garbage sanitary landfills, subways, underground projects of buildings, and anti-seepage of rooftop reservoirs.
3.Waterproof mechanism
The waterproof mechanism of GCL is mainly based on the swelling characteristics of bentonite particles when exposed to water. When the bentonite waterproof blanket comes into contact with water, the internal bentonite particles absorb water and the volume increases rapidly, thereby forming a dense waterproof layer in the blanket. Under the restrictive effect of the two layers of geotextiles, the bentonite changes from disordered to ordered expansion. The continuous water absorption and expansion results in the bentonite layer itself becoming dense, thus having a waterproof effect.
