The waterproofing of GCL is mainly due to its unique composition materials and waterproofing mechanism. The swelling characteristics and self-healing ability of bentonite provide a strong waterproof barrier for GCL, while the reinforcement of geotextile or non-woven fabric further enhances its overall performance and stability.
Why is GCL achieve waterproof?
1. Composition materials
GCL is mainly composed of two layers of materials: one layer is natural sodium-based bentonite, and the other layer is geotextile or non-woven fabric. The bentonite layer is the core waterproof component of GCL, while the geotextile or non-woven fabric plays a role in protection and reinforcement.
2. Waterproof mechanism
The expansion characteristics of bentonite:
Bentonite is a natural inorganic material with the characteristics of swelling when exposed to water and shrinking when losing water. When GCL comes into contact with water, the bentonite particles inside will quickly absorb water and swell, and the volume can increase to several times or even more than the original.
This expansion effect allows the bentonite particles to form a close arrangement, thereby forming a dense waterproof layer inside the GCL, effectively preventing water penetration.
The self-healing ability of bentonite:
The bentonite mineral itself has ion exchange properties, which gives GCL good self-healing ability.
When the GCL is slightly punctured or damaged, the bentonite particles can quickly migrate and fill the damaged area, repair the defects through their own expansion, and continue to maintain a good waterproof effect.
Reinforcement of geotextile or non-woven fabric:
Geotextile or non-woven fabric, as the carrier and protective layer of GCL, can enhance the overall strength and stability of GCL.
They can also prevent bentonite particles from falling off or dispersing when subjected to external forces, thereby ensuring that the waterproof performance of GCL is not affected.
3. Application scope and advantages
GCL has been widely used in many fields due to its excellent waterproof performance, good self-healing ability and simple construction. These fields include but are not limited to:
Seepage prevention of landfill bottom and slope
Seepage prevention system of water conservancy projects (such as reservoirs, dams, channel linings, artificial lakes, reservoirs, etc.)
Waterproof treatment of basements, tunnels and various buildings
In addition, GCL also has the advantages of environmental protection, good durability, and no restrictions on construction environment temperature, making it an important material in the field of waterproof engineering.
