What is the difference between composite geotextile and geomembrane?
There are significant differences between composite geotextiles and geomembranes in many aspects. The following is a detailed comparison of the two:
1. Definition and composition
Composite Geotextile: It is made of non-woven fabrics (or other geotextiles) and plastic films through a specific process. It combines the characteristics of geotextiles and geomembranes, and has both the tensile and puncture resistance of geotextiles and the anti-seepage performance of geomembranes.
Geomembrane: It is mainly made of polymer materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is an impermeable material mainly used in anti-seepage projects.
2. Physical properties
Composite Geotextile: It has good tensile, puncture and aging resistance. Its surface usually has small holes or perforations to increase its grip in the soil.
Geomembrane: It has high strength, high corrosion resistance, high aging resistance and excellent anti-leakage performance. Its tight molecular structure and good sealing make it impossible for moisture to penetrate the membrane layer.
3. Uses
Composite Geotextile: Mainly used for isolation, filtration and soil reinforcement, such as preventing foundation seepage and rock scouring. It is widely used in engineering fields such as roads, railways, tunnels, docks, dams, etc.
Geomembrane: Mainly used in anti-seepage projects, such as reservoirs, dams, artificial lakes, river management, etc. By forming an impermeable barrier, it effectively prevents water leakage and ensures engineering safety. It is also widely used in environmental protection, gardening, petrochemicals, mining, transportation facilities, aquaculture, agriculture and other fields.
4. Construction method
Composite Geotextile: Generally, it is constructed by mechanical reinforcement and laying. During the laying process, it is necessary to pay attention to maintaining its flatness and properly fix it to prevent displacement.
Geomembrane: It needs to be laid on a flat, sharp-free base surface, and a continuous waterproof layer is formed by welding, overlapping and other methods. Temperature, humidity and other conditions must be strictly controlled during construction to ensure welding quality.
5. Water permeability
Composite Geotextile: Although it combines the characteristics of geotextile and geomembrane, its water permeability mainly depends on the geotextile part. It allows water to pass through and prevents soil particles from being lost.
Geomembrane: As an impermeable material, its main function is to prevent liquid penetration.
