What is a geocell？

Geocell is a three-dimensional mesh cell structure formed by high-strength welding of reinforced HDPE sheet materials. It is usually made by ultrasonic needle welding. Due to engineering needs, some holes are punched on the membrane.

Geocell construction technology is a widely used technology in highway, railway, river slope protection and other projects, geocell can effectively improve the bearing capacity and stability of the foundation.

The general steps of geocell grass slope protection construction are as follows:

Slope levelling→drainage facilities construction→geocell construction→guest soil backfill→jet construction→non-woven fabric covering→pre-maintenance

1. Levelling of slopes

The levelling of the slope is related to the success or failure of the geocell grass slope protection project. When the slope is not flat, laying geocell is easy to produce stress concentration phenomenon, resulting in cell weld cracking, cell collapse; at the same time it will also cause the local cell and slope gap is too large, to backfill with external soil caused great difficulties. Therefore, the construction should strictly control the slope level, straight, especially the stone section of the blast surface effect, while artificial slope repair, remove pumice, tree roots on the slope, fill the potholes, until to meet the construction requirements.

2. Drainage facilities construction

Whether the slope drainage system is set up reasonably well, directly affects the growth environment of slope vegetation and the stability of geocell slope protection system. For long, large slope, need to set up drainage ditch at the top of the slope, the foot of the slope, slope platform, whether to set up slope drainage ditch according to the size of the slope water flow to consider. The horizontal spacing of the general slope drainage ditch is 40-50cm.

3. Geocell construction

①. In the slope according to the design of the location of the anchor, drilling with a drill rod, into the hole will be designed according to the requirements of the bending, rust-proof treatment of the anchor into the hole;

②. After the anchor is set, the geocell should be hung immediately. When hanging, attention should be paid to make the connection between the units aligned as far as possible, and tighten the connecting bolts or connecting buckles. At the same time, the geocell should be spread as close as possible to the slope surface;

③. After hanging the geocell, the concrete anchor block can be set up as needed, and the anchor block should be vibrated and compacted during construction.

4. Backfilling of foreign soil

Geocell can be filled with foreign soil inside the chamber after fixing, local soil should be chosen as much as possible, the topsoil dug out during the construction of the roadbed is the ideal source of soil, and it is strictly prohibited to use the soil mixed with stones and gravel, and the soil can be properly moistened before filling so as to make it lumpy, which is conducive to the construction.

When filling, it can be carried out layer by layer from bottom to top. When the construction is inconvenient, an escalator can be set up for more than one person to pass through the block. Filling, each grid outside the soil should be dense and full, and above the surface of the geocell 1 ~ 2 cm. Filling should pay special attention to construction safety, must use a safety rope for elevated work.

5、Spraying construction

Spraying construction should be carried out as soon as possible after the backfilling of guest soil. Grass seed, wood fibre, water retaining agent, adhesive, fertilizer, dye and water should be mixed evenly according to the design ratio and sprayed evenly on the slope surface through sprayer.

6. Covering non-woven fabric for greening maintenance

In order to protect the grass seeds from rainwater washout and achieve the effect of heat preservation and moisture retention, it is necessary to cover non-woven fabrics to promote the germination and growth of grass seeds. When covering non-woven fabrics, fixed bamboo nails should be set up with a spacing of 40*40cm. people should be assigned to supervise and pay attention to timely repair of bamboo nails and non-woven fabrics.

7. Preliminary Maintenance

①. Sprinkler maintenance: use a high-pressure sprayer to atomise the maintenance water and moisten the slope surface evenly. Pay attention to control the distance between the spray nozzle and the slope surface and the moving speed to ensure that the high-pressure water does not impact the slope surface to form runoff.

Maintenance cycle is determined according to the growth of slope vegetation.

②. Fertiliser: fertiliser should be chased in time according to the needs of plant growth.

③. Timely replanting: after the germination of grass seed, sparse and grassless places should be replanted in time.

Note: Geocell Precautions
①. Geocell grass slope protection is applicable to the slope is not greater than 1:0.75, the slope height of each level is not greater than 10m of mudstone, limestone, sandstone, conglomerate and other rocky graben slopes.
②. Construction should generally be carried out in the spring, try to avoid construction in the rainy season.
③. Each process should be closely linked to avoid long-term exposure of the formed slope caused by damage and imported soil washed away by rain.
④. Pay attention to the purchase of reliable quality geocell products.
⑤. Attention should be paid to construction safety during construction.
