There are two main production processes for geomembranes, namely, film blowing process and flat extrusion process (also known as laminating process).
What are the production processes of geomembrane?
Blown film process
1. Raw material preparation
Select high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or other suitable plastic raw materials, and pre-treat them by screening, cleaning, drying, etc.
2. Extrusion molding
The pre-treated raw materials are fed into the extruder, heated and melted, and then extruded into a film from the extruder head. The temperature, pressure, speed and other parameters of the extruder need to be adjusted according to different materials and thicknesses.
3. Blown film molding
At the extruder head, the molten plastic is blown into a film bubble, and a geomembrane with a certain thickness and performance is formed by adjusting the blowing ratio and cooling method.
4. Traction and reeling
The blown geomembrane is pulled and reeled to form a roll product. During the reeling process, an automatic metering device is usually installed to ensure the accuracy of the product length.
Advantages
The geomembrane produced by the blown film process has a high blowing ratio and stronger molecular bite, so it has better tensile and ductility.
The finished product is a whole, and the rough spots are not easy to peel off, which is more suitable for projects with high quality requirements, such as landfills, reservoirs, etc.

Flat extrusion process (film coating process)
1. Raw material preparation
Similar to the film blowing process, select suitable plastic raw materials for pretreatment.
2. Extrusion molding
The pretreated raw materials are fed into the extruder, heated and melted, and extruded from the extruder head into a film. However, the flat extrusion process usually does not directly blow into a film bubble, but forms a film by casting and quenching.
3. Spraying rough surface
For geomembranes that require a rough surface, the flat extrusion process will form a rough surface on the smooth surface by spraying rough particles after the smooth geomembrane is produced. The rough surface formed in this way is not a whole material, and the rough spots are easy to peel off.
4. Cutting and packaging
The cooled geomembrane is cut to obtain the required size and shape, and then packaged.
Advantages
The production cost is relatively low, and the product price is advantageous.
The product has good flexibility and is suitable for some projects with high flexibility requirements.
